Why do men behave justly? Is it because they fear societal punishment? Are they trembling before notions of divine retribution? Do the stronger elements of society scare the weak into submission in the name of law? Or do men behave justly because it is good for them to do so? Is justice, regardless of its rewards and punishments, a good thing in and of itself? How do we define justice? In the Republic, Plato sets out to answer these questions to define justice, and to define it in such a way as to show that justice is worthwhile in and of itself. He meets these two challenges with a single solution: a definition of justice that appeals to human psychology, rather than to perceived behavior.

A powerful movie exposing the life of so many real muslim women living in islamic states. Theo Van Gogh was later killed by a man named (of course) Muhammad for insulting islam. Much as Salmon Rushdie, the woman writer lives in seclusion and protection, as the death threats continue. This movie WILL LIVE ON.

Iran's hard-line Revolutionary Guards have declared the death sentence on British author Salman Rushdie is still valid - 16 years after it was issued. The order was issued after publication of Mr Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses", condemned as blasphemous. "The day will come when they will punish the apostate Rushdie for his scandalous acts and insults against the Koran and the Prophet (Mohammed)," they said, two days before the anniversary of the order. Ayatollah Khamenei said he still believed the British novelist deserved to die. "They talk of respect for all religions but they support an apostate worthy of death like Rushdie," he said.

‘The Satanic Verses’ has three separate stories which progress alternately in a total of nine chapters and over 561 pages. Out of the three, the longest one is about the aforementioned Bollywood actors, namely Gibreel Farishta and Saladin Chamchawala. This story takes up five chapters out of nine and covers more than 400 pages. The other two, smaller stories get two chapters and 80-90 pages each. One of them is quite obviously about the Holy Quran being revealed to Prophet Mohammed in Mecca, though Rushdie changes some names including that of Mohammed himself. It is this part of the book- a total of 90 pages out of 560- which has got all the Mullahs baying for Rushdie’s blood. The other story is about a Muslim-dominated Indian village where a girl called Ayesha claims to be God’s messenger and inspires all villagers to walk across the Arabian Sea to Mecca, Bible-style! (They all drown). In the main story (I presume that the longest story must be the main one, though with Rushdie, you can’t be sure), the two actors survive the bombing but undergo a transformation wherein they assume the personalities of an angel and a Prophet. (At least that is what I suspected, though I couldn’t fathom for my life why one of them begins to grow goat hooves and horns!) Here, Rushdie apparently draws parallels with the story of Prophet Mohammed who received the Holy Quran from Allah through Angel Gibreel.
The other two, smaller stories are a remarkable contrast from the first one. For reasons best known to Rushdie, these two stories are characterized by straightforward narratives and simple language. I did not still get the point but at least I got the plot! The first one abut the Prophet is, frankly speaking, quite inflammatory and pulls no punches. It says that the revelations that Mohammed claimed to have received, were not messages from Allah but Prophet’s own hallucinations or worse, something Prophet did to further his own agenda. In addition, there is a sub-plot about twelve prostitutes from a Mecca brothel taking on roles of the twelve wives of Prophet to help a poet take revenge on Mohammed. (Rushdie does not compare Prophet’s wives to prostitutes. But how will anyone explain that to the Mullahs?). The story also tells about the three pagan Goddesses of pre-Islamic Mecca and how a patriarchal Mohammed disallowed their worship. The third story of Ayesha, the girl who leads the villagers to their watery grave in Arabian Sea has some elements of relatable dark comedy. Its characters are funny and it is, overall, the most compact and concise among all three stories. That leaves us with the title of the novel. The fable goes that Mohammed received the Message of the God though Angel Gibreel over a period of 23 years. Every day he used to walk up to a hill near Mecca where Angel Gibreel spoke to him. Then Mohammed would come back and give the Message to his followers. The Satan did not want the True Message to reach the man. So one day, Satan possessed Gibreel’s mind for a brief period and Gibreel began mouthing Satan’s words, which were taken down by Mohammed thinking it is God’s message. But after some time, Gibreel freed himself from Satan’s grip and told Mohammed to remove these verses from Quran. These were ‘The Satanic Verses’.
The parables of ‘The Satanic Verses’ speaks of our separation from ourselves and God within us and common sense and our senses, for which Satan is but a metaphor for our own shadow.

. Religion has done much good in many times and places, but it has also been the source and cause of horrible evils. As I write, the world just commemorated the tenth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide where Christian Hutus killed almost a million fellow Christian Tutsis. If you read your papers carefully enough you’ll also know of the unfolding genocide in the Darfur region of western Sudan where government backed Muslims are killing fellow Muslims. In 1487 the Aztecs sacrificed 20,000 people in four days at the consecration of a temple. Widow burning, caste systems, female genital mutilation, witch hunts, ritual abuse, ethnic cleansing, suicide bombers, apartheid, murdering abortion doctors---all these evils and more have enlisted religion for its cause. A few years ago Mark Juergensmeyer published an important book entitled Terror in the Mind of God; The Global Rise of Religious Violence (2000). In it he devoted successive chapters to violence by Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, and Buddhists. Kimball revisits the same, disturbing and disheartening theme but takes a thematic approach. Alarms should go off when religion exhibits any of the five characteristics he identifies: fanatical claims of absolute truth, blind obedience to totalitarian, charismatic or authoritarian leaders, actively trying to usher in the end times, justifying religious ends by any means, and any and all forms of dehumanization. We might also add pressure tactics of coercion, deception and false advertisement, alienation and isolation from one’s family or community, and any and all forms of exploitation (time, money, sex, etc.). Anne Lamott recounts how her therapist advised her that when God hates all the same people that you hate, then you can be confident that you have created Him in your own image. God give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to love our neighbor as ourselves, for as Jesus said, this is the ultimate barometer of my love for the God I claim to follow...
